Lucky Seat is a free online lottery that sells deeply discounted seats to Broadway tours, New York shows, Cirque du Soleil and more, often for $25 to $59 and sometimes as little as $10. You enter for the dates you can make, and if you win, you buy the tickets and pick them up at the box office. I won row AA orchestra seats to The Lion King at Atlanta's Fox Theatre for $28.50 each.

Lucky Seat is a ticket lottery system that offers deeply discounted tickets for Broadway and other live performances, including musicals, plays, and even ballets. Many people assume it's exclusive to New York City, but most of the offerings are touring shows all over the country. When I checked the list in February 2025, it included shows in:
- Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Baltimore, Birmingham, Boston, Chattanooga, Cleveland, Detroit, East Lansing
- Fayetteville, Greenville (SC), Houston, Jacksonville, Louisville, Memphis, Miami, New York, Phoenix, Redmond, Rockford, Seattle
The program lets theater lovers enter a drawing for the chance to buy significantly reduced-price tickets, sometimes for less than 20% of the original price!
What Type of Shows Are Available?
The lineup changes as tours move from city to city. In February 2025 it included:
- Musicals: Hamilton, The Lion King, SIX, MJ, The Book of Mormon, Moulin Rouge!, Come From Away, Mamma Mia!, Hadestown, Cabaret, Sunset Blvd., Parade, Peter Pan
- Plays and comedy: Churchill, Forbidden Broadway
- Cirque du Soleil touring shows: ECHO, KOOZA, CRYSTAL
- Ballet and special events: Atlanta Ballet's The Rite of Spring, a Hugh Jackman concert, and an Encore Gala celebrating 50 years of A Chorus Line
How Does Lucky Seat Work?
The process is simple, but timing is key:
- Enter the Lottery: Enter for free on the Lucky Seat website or their Linktree for any listed show dates. There's no limit to how many shows and showtimes you can enter, so throw your name in for every date that works for you! Drawings stay open until the "entries close" date.
- Choose Your Ticket Preferences: Select how many tickets you want (up to two) and whether you need accessible seating.
- Wait for the Drawing: Winners are drawn either the week before or the week of the show. For example, the Hamilton entry above had its drawing on Thursday, February 6, 2025 for performances from February 11 to 16. If you win, you'll be notified by email, and you can also check the Lucky Seat Results page in your account.
- Purchase Quickly: Winners get a firm deadline to buy by credit card. When I won Clue tickets for a Thursday, January 30, 2025 show, I had to buy by 1:00 PM on January 24. Don't delay!
- Pick Up Your Tickets: You must collect your tickets in person at the box office with the same ID you used to enter.
What Are the Odds?
Lucky Seat doesn't publish odds, but here's my real record for Clue at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta: I entered eight performances, two tickets each, and won one.
How Much Do Lucky Seat Tickets Cost?
Each show sets its own lottery price. On the February 2025 list, most were $25 to $59 per ticket, Hamilton was just $10 in several cities, and a few special events cost more (the Hugh Jackman concert was $175). That's a HUGE bargain considering regular prices often start at $60 and go up to $200+ for the same seats.
While seat locations are assigned randomly, they are usually good seats, often in the orchestra or mezzanine sections. In some cases, winners have even scored front-center orchestra seats! However, you don't know the exact location until you pick up your tickets.
Look at my FRONT orchestra Lion King tickets: row AA, orchestra left, at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta on October 8, 2024. They would have been hundreds of dollars, but Lucky Seat had them for $28.50 each, about $30!
A Few Important Rules and Tips
- You can't transfer the tickets: Since you have to pick them up in person with your ID, you can't buy them and send someone else to collect them. However, you can pick them up and resell them afterward (though this is frowned upon).
- You gotta be flexible: At the end of the day, it's a lottery. If you're on a 2-day trip to NYC, or it's a bucket-list show and you MUST sit front row, you might just want to buy your tickets outright. But if you live in a city where Lucky Seat has offerings, you don't really care where you sit, and you're flexible about what day you attend, sign up for the lottery! You have nothing to lose.
- Get to the box office early: Some venues have long pickup lines, and a slow-moving line could mean you risk missing the start of the show.
- Check the seat value after pickup: It's fun to compare! Look up your seat location on ticket resale sites afterward to see how much you saved, often 2-3 times what you paid. Knowing how much you saved just makes the show that much better.
Is Lucky Seat Worth It?
Absolutely! If you're flexible and you love live theater but don't want to spend a fortune, Lucky Seat is a fantastic way to see top-tier performances at a fraction of the cost. It's free to enter, and while winning isn't guaranteed, the savings make it well worth trying.
