U-Haul vs Home Depot: One charges by the minute while the other charges a flat rate but then bills by milage. Use this calculator to figure out which option cheaper for your truck rental and what the breakeven point would be.

This calculator is based on a fixed distance. You know how much truck you need and how far you will drive. Enter the details below to see the time limit you'd have if you spend the same amount of money on a Home Depot truck.

Home Depot Fees

Assumptions and Notes

- Driving Distance should be calculated: (only U-Haul charges mileage fees)

UHaul Address → Loading Address → Unloading Address → UHaul Address

- Fuel costs are omitted because they will be similar for both U-Haul and Home Depot.

- Taxes are omitted because the tax rate is the same regardless of the rental option chosen.

- Refundable deposits are omitted because... they're refundable.

- Home Depot's rentals are only available in 15-minute increments.

- If you need a truck larger than 12ft, Home Depot is not an option as they only offer 12ft box vans. U-Haul offers 10ft and 15ft box vans.

Tips:

  • If you're comparing truck rentals, you're probably moving furniture. Protect it with some cheap covers.

  • U-Haul charges for renting moving blankets, but you can buy your own once and reuse them.

  • Neither U-Haul nor Home Depot provides Ratchet Straps & Tie-Downs, and you'll absolutely want them.

  • Renting a dolly can cost $7–$15 per day. Buying one for $30 might be cheaper if you'll use it again.

  • Nothing derails moving day faster than running out of tape.
