Minxwax Polyshades Review (before and after photos)

I recently purchased Minwax Polyshades to re-stain my 20 year old cabinets in my bathroom. What drew me to the product was that I could use this on top of my old finish. I purchased the product at my local Home Depot for around $10.

First off, I am novice when it comes to do it yourself types of projects and I found that this product was quite easy to use.

With my bathroom cabinets, I first took the doors off and cleaned them off.

I then gently rubbed steel wool on them as instructed.

After that I mixed the Minwax Polyshades very well. Make sure you continually are mixing it while you are applying this to your cabinets, this is very important.

I then applied my first coat and waited 6 hours. I then applied a second coat. At this point I was happy with the color so I stopped there. The color I used was Antique Walnut. You can see all the other colors here http://www.minwax.com/products/one_step_stain_and_finishes/polyshades.html#Colors

My bathroom is red and I am using energy saving LED lights so when I took the picture, the flash came on, so the picture doesn't really do it justice. The finish is much more glossy and has a darker, rich color that doesn't show here.

Overall, I am very happy with the results. I even bought bumpers so the cabinets close as if they were brand new. I will be doing my kitchen as well and will also buy knobs for the doors to give it an upgraded look.

I highly recommend this product. Especially if you are using this to re-stain cabinets with pre-existing finish.

After:

The smell is pretty strong, so you may want to make sure the room has plenty of ventilation. After a few weeks, I cleaned the cabinets with wood cleaner to reduce the smell.

Hope this helps.

Nice, I ended up making a pretty sweet coffee table, and if you ever want a unique finish to the top of it that is durable look into doing resin coating,
