Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbell Review

I wanted to buy some dumbbells for my home but didn't want a bunch of weights laying around a room and I wanted weights that I could put upstairs in my home without worrying about the pain it would be to carry them back downstairs if I moved them. Additionally, I wanted a large variety of different weighted dumb bells, but since its about $1 a pound for dumb bells at my local Sports Authority and Big 5; I decided to go with the Bowflex SelectTech 552 dumbbells.

Specs from Bowflex website:
Replaces 15 sets of weights. Weights adjust from 5 to 52.5 lbs. (2.5 lb. increments the first 25 lbs.) Easy-to-use selection dials for adjusting weights.

Pros:

  1. Space saver
  2. Reduces workout time due to weight adjustment knobs
  3. Comes with useful DVD on proper workout techniques
  4. Very good price for amount of different weight combinations

Cons:

  1. Weights are made out of a hard plastic material that doesn't feel exceptionally durable
  2. Sometimes weight jams occur where you cannot release the weight from it's caddy
  3. Dumbbells are somewhat large, but this is due to how the product works and can also serve as a benefit for muscle stabilization

Overall I am very happy with the weights, I use an adjustable bench that goes decline, flat, incline, and full up right. With the dumbbells and the bench I am able to effectively do a full workout similar to one I would do in the gym. I would highly suggest for people who are familiar with working with dumbbells and want to save space and time during a workout. For novices, I would suggest using very low weight at first to get use to the size of the dumbbells. Other then the occassionally "jamming" where the weight gets stuck, I am very happy with this product.

4/5 stars
